A bit of history and information about Jonny’s creative journey!

Ulster Image is a Northern Ireland–based creative media company delivering high-quality visual storytelling across promotional film, documentary production, broadcast media, press photography, PR, and commercial content creation.

Founded by photographer and filmmaker Jonny Collins, Ulster Image was rebranded from JCollins Productions in 2018 to establish a stronger, more recognisable identity within the creative industry. Since then, the company has continued to grow, providing professional media services to broadcasters, businesses, public sector organisations and private clients.

Our Story

Jonny’s passion for photography began at a young age. Early recognition came through success in international photography competitions — including a first-place win and a subsequent runner-up award — which sparked a lifelong commitment to visual storytelling.

Building on this foundation, Jonny expanded into videography, developing personal projects and steadily growing a client base. In 2015, he completed a Level 3 BTEC in Media before progressing to a BSc (Hons) in Cinematic Arts at Ulster University, Magee. During his undergraduate studies, he refined both his technical expertise and creative direction while building a strong professional network.

His final-year documentary, produced in collaboration with Foyle Search and Rescue, focused on suicide prevention and gained significant engagement across social media platforms — reinforcing his desire to pursue a full-time career in media production.

Following graduation in 2018, Jonny was accepted onto the pioneering MA in International Journalism with Hostile Environment Reporting at Ulster University, Coleraine — the first programme of its kind in Northern Ireland. The course provided specialist training in conflict reporting, safety and security, equipping him with the skills to operate professionally in demanding environments.

Broadcast & Industry Experience

Since completing his Master’s degree, Jonny has worked on assignments for leading broadcasters across Northern Ireland, Ireland and the UK, including:

Ulster Image also operates extensively within the North West region, particularly across Derry and Tyrone, providing press photography, news coverage, sporting events and entertainment media.

Music, Touring & Festival Photography

Jonny has toured extensively across the UK as the official photographer and media creator for The Seeger Session Revival, documenting life on the road, live performances and behind-the-scenes moments. Touring requires adaptability, discretion and the ability to work quickly in ever-changing lighting and high-energy environments — skills that translate directly into both commercial and broadcast work.

In addition to touring, Jonny has worked at major music festivals and live events, photographing both locally established and internationally recognised artists. Working in these fast-paced settings demands precision, timing and a strong understanding of storytelling through imagery — capturing not only the performance, but the atmosphere and scale of the event itself.

Outdoor & Adventure Documentation

Alongside commercial and broadcast assignments, Jonny has developed a strong portfolio documenting life in the outdoors. From hiking and mountain expeditions to climbing, cycling events and triathlons, he specialises in capturing people immersed in their environment — authentic moments, endurance and movement.

Operating in exposed and unpredictable conditions requires preparation, resilience and technical confidence. Jonny’s training and experience allow him to work safely and efficiently in challenging terrain, delivering professional results without compromising creativity.

At the core of this work is a commitment to documenting real people living real lives — whether pushing physical limits on a mountain trail or navigating everyday moments in natural environments..

Travel & Landscape Photography

Travel and landscape photography remain a core creative outlet and continue to drive Jonny’s passion between large-scale commercial projects. From dramatic coastlines to remote mountain regions, this work allows for slower, more considered storytelling — studying light, weather and composition to create powerful, atmospheric imagery.

These personal projects not only keep the creative process fresh but continually refine the visual style and discipline that underpin all commercial commissions.
